In just over four years, Whitehall has released an EP and album, along with a few singles, and have also gained over 2000 Instagram followers by their distinct aesthetic and social media presence. The five piece indie rock band from South Carolina, is just over half done their North American tour. I had the wonderful chance to chat with the group about all things music, read below.
First off, could you all introduce yourselves and what your roles are in the band?
---> Hi I’m avery and i play the chicken.
---> I’m Brennan, I play basketball.
---> My name is Davis Rowe, linebacker at LSU.
---> My name is paddy and i play the traffic cone.
You're halfway done your North American tour, how has being on the road been so far?
---> Like a slice of pie- pumpkin, specifically! We've been touring all summer as well so it’s been super great to go back to some of the same cities.
How have the shows been so far? Have you seen familiar and new faces?
---> The shows have been so exciting! It’s awesome going back and seeing the same people who came to previous shows and all the friends we’ve made along the way, as long as a ton of new faces. There’s been a lot of energy and the shows and we’ve been playing a lot of new songs which is fun. It’s awesome to feel like we’re growing as a band.
Your latest release is "Learning To Dance", which was also your first release of the year, why do you feel like this song was a good way to say 'hey, we're back!'?
---> We wrote this song after Ocean Fiction, our last record, and before the songs we’re writing for our next record, so it was super fun to put out a song unrelated to other larger projects!
Do you think your sound has evolved already, from your release before that ("Stimulants")?
---> Definitely! We went through a lineup change after that release and lost a saxophone, so our writing process has really changed. It’s challenged us to grow individually and fill different roles in the songwriting process.
If you had a chance to convince someone reading this to come to one of your shows this tour, what would you say?!
---> Paddy is going to wear a jumpsuit! There’s a lot of energy, you’ll feel good, and grab a bucket for your face before it gets melted off! Get on your dancing shoes and we’d love to see ya!
